{"id":869,"date":"2020-06-02T07:28:37","date_gmt":"2020-06-01T21:28:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seedpeopleconsulting.com.au\/uncategorized\/i-want-you-back-transitioning-to-our-next-normal-post-covid-19\/"},"modified":"2026-05-16T16:59:02","modified_gmt":"2026-05-16T06:59:02","slug":"transitioning-to-post-covid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seedpeopleconsulting.com.au\/transitioning-to-post-covid\/","title":{"rendered":"I Want You Back: Transitioning to our next normal post COVID-19"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the government slowly lifts COVID-19 restrictions, employers are turning their minds to planning for establishing their \u201cnext normal\u201d post COVID-19.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As we keep hearing: There is no \u2018returning back to normal\u2019.\u00a0 Normal is not as we once knew it: we are creating a new normal.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As no employees are the same and not all workplaces are the same, different strategies will need to be put in place to suit your workplace, your next normal and the needs of your employees.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this 3-part series, we will explore the different scenarios to which employers and employees are now turning their minds:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li><strong>Scenario 1<\/strong> \u2013 Everyone returns to a physically co-located workplace, in a face to face environment;<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Scenario 2<\/strong> \u2013 A blended approach \u2013 either some now in the workplace and some working from home, or some people are now retaining a higher level of work from home than pre-COVID; and<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Scenario 3<\/strong> \u2013 The \u2018workplace\u2019 is now completely virtual, without a common physical workplace.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, we\u2019re jumping into Scenario 1: \u2018I want you back!\u2019<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So, what\u2019s changed?<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In response to COVID-19, workplaces have changed in numerous ways:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>how employees communicate with each other;<\/li>\r\n<li>how a business operates with its customers, suppliers, clients;<\/li>\r\n<li>adopting more technologies including Zoom, MS Teams and smart devices;<\/li>\r\n<li>the significantly reduced need to travel for business;<\/li>\r\n<li>an increased demand by business to have a workforce that is highly skilled, flexible and elastic enough to take on tasks that may be outside their traditional role;<\/li>\r\n<li>for many, the start and finish times of work are no longer the priority; the main focus has been the completion of task and achievement of goals; and<\/li>\r\n<li>an increased appreciation for those who have needed to work flexibly and\/or have had commitments outside of work that have possibly impacted on their career at work.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With these changes, employers who were previously anti-work from home, have been forced to consider the ongoing benefits of embracing this option.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Scenario 1 \u2013 \u201cAll right everyone, it\u2019s time to come back to the office\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s start with our first scenario \u2013 <strong>the decision that your business wants everyone to be co-located in one, or many, common physical workplaces.<\/strong>\u00a0 There could be many reasons for this:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>This is where your customers need you \u2013 eg. Hospitality or other service-related industries; or<\/li>\r\n<li>You don\u2019t have the technology to maintain the current work from home approach; or<\/li>\r\n<li>You are taking the Sheryl Sandberg approach, of wanting \u2018everyone at work and focused\u2019; or<\/li>\r\n<li>Many other reasons!<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As we outlined below, there are also going to be a number of potential hesitations from employees in returning to an \u2018office\u2019 or similar environment.\u00a0 Some of the most common we have heard are:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>No travel times!\u00a0 Walking to work now takes 2 minutes (if that);<\/li>\r\n<li>Business up the top, comfy down the bottom \u2013 the ability for employees to take on a \u2018news reader\u2019 approach to what they wear \u2018to work\u2019 at the moment, is hard for some employees to come back from; and<\/li>\r\n<li>More \u2018me\u2019 time \u2013 not having a commute to work, many people are saying that they have more time for exercise, sleep and having afternoon tea with their kids after school (now that home schooling is finished for most!).<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there are also many reasons to return \u2013 ability to have clarity on what\u2019s a work space and what\u2019s a home space, so you can turn off from work; connection to team members on a face to face basis (we\u2019re human, we still love connection); and the drain of endless video conferences where you feel like everyone is looking at you, and you can see yourself.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re focused on bringing everyone \u2018back\u2019 into the office (or similar location), let\u2019s chat about how to approach it.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Your business\u2019 COVIDSafe Plan<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re wanting your team\/s to return to working in one location, the first thing to consider is making sure you have a considered and up to date COVIDSafe Plan.\u00a0 The National COVID-19 Coordination Commission has published a template that enables businesses to build a tailored plan focused on:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Keeping people safe;<\/li>\r\n<li>Adapting your business;
