Client Spotlight Anglicare

Michael Eichler is the Learning and Development Manager for Anglicare, a Christian not-for-profit organisation. Our team has been fortunate to work alongside Anglicare for over a year and continue to do so in 2019.

As Seed continues to work on a number of HR Projects for Anglicare, we sat down recently with Michael to chat about the past and present projects and the value Seed People Consulting has been able to add to the work of Anglicare.

  1. Tell us a little about your organisation?

We are a Sydney based Christian not for profit organisation focussed on supporting people at all stages of life. We have around 3,900 staff and 2,000 volunteers working with individuals and families in areas such as food and financial assistance, family, parenting and youth support, Foster care and adoption, counselling, Home care, Retirement living and Residential Aged Care.

  1. Tell us about your role in the organisation? What are you passionate about?

I’m the Learning & Development Manager and a key part of my role is partnering with the leaders to design the learning they need.

I’m passionate about helping others grow their potential. I lead a small, but fabulous, team responsible for designing the learning to support the development of our staff to deliver exceptional service to all we serve.

I’m also passionate about leadership development, helping our leaders build on their skills to empower our people to be the best they can be.

  1. What would you say are the biggest people challenges in your organisation?

Time… Balancing the needs of those we are seeking to support with the needs of our staff.

We work in an area where there is incredible need, and most of our staff are passionate about their work. Many give above and beyond. Developing our leaders to understand their staff and ensure they take the time to invest in them, as well as those we support externally, is key to creating a sustainable workforce.

There is never enough time, but leaders need to make time to invest in their people to enable them to grow and give their best. When they are able to do this well, it empowers people and amazingly increases their motivation and purpose AND gives the leader more time.

  1. Can you briefly describe the work/project/employee issue that you sought Seed’s help with?

We’ve worked with Seed on a couple of key areas around leadership.

The first was developing an organisational wide Leadership Capability framework.  This involved understanding from our leaders in the different functional areas, what capabilities were needed to be a leader at Anglicare, which were then mapped to the various levels of leadership.

The second key project was co-designing our bespoke Coaching program. No pressure with this one… all we wanted was a program that would create a coaching culture at Anglicare! We worked with Seed to design the program in an extremely tight timeframe, then Seed delivered the pilot program and the development program for the first 7 cohorts.  We’ve now completed our handover of this project, so that we can deliver the program inhouse.

  1. How was the process of working through the design of that solution?

The process was great. Stace, Jules and the team took the time to understand our organisation and this made all the difference. They took the time to listen and came back with suggested directions and plans, but always ensured we had control of our destiny.

They challenged when needed and had amazing patience when workloads delayed responses.  Their presence and ability to facilitate our design thinking workshops enabled us to move forward faster than anticipated and deliver a quality outcome.

  1. What type of improvement have you seen in the organisation since engaging with Seed on these projects?

I see coaching as a key enabler to effective leadership development and we are already seeing the benefits of having over 150 of our key leaders complete the six month program with some great stories raised in reflection workshops, as leaders speak to the difference coaching has made to their teams and their own leadership.

This, along with the Leadership Capability framework, has set the foundation for leadership development across Anglicare.

The Leadership Capability framework is a simple, yet detailed document that has allowed us to understand where our development needs are, enabling us now to focus and build our leadership programs.

  1. How would you say Seed has added value to your organisation?

They’ve brought ‘balcony thinking’ to us, helping us to bring together our thoughts into a tangible application.  Seed have been able to help us commence our journey and provide us with a set of solid tools through collaborative codesign, to develop our leadership for the future.

  1. How would you describe your experience with Seed in 3 words?

Engaging, productive and successful

  1. Is there anything else you would like to share with us regarding your experience with Seed People Consulting?

The Seed team are a pleasure to work with.  They know their stuff but are wise enough to hear and not just listen, brave enough to challenge not just do, and skilled enough to exceed expectations not just deliver outcomes.
